Finally Oct 7 arrived!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally Oct 7 arrived. A little late!, but arrived. I know, your like what the??? It is Nov 17th. Let me explain! Last year on oct 7 it turned out to be the best day I ever had in my ‘backyard”(sherkston). It blew like stink SW all day like then switched to WNW right when I got there after work. It was so cool it sucked all the water out which made it super shallow, and from shore, the waves did not look that big. But I had 2 try it anyway. I went out on 5.3 and the goya 115. It turn out 2 be the best day of my life in my backyard. Mast high sets, everything was like glassy smooth, 6+ full bottom turns(I mean lay down turns), nice crumbly waves, with perfect side off cond. I sailed hooikpa for 3 months straight, and I swear if I closed my eyes I could have been there, very little difference. Except 6000 miles away, salt water and those, are every day cond for hooikpa. But never less you get my point. The sweetest thing is when its blowing WNW nobody thinks its good at sherkston so they sail Ontario or elsewhere. I have the best wave of the year to my self. Well randy and gail got out last year but both got thrashed pretty good. This is funny ! I told randy before he went out, the first rule of big wave sailing is don’t “ Fall in front of the big wave”. I told him that 20 times before he went out. So what does he do! Yup fall in front of the first big wave he caught. Completely demolished his 5.3 and mast. He just paddled in on his board and boom. Great stuff. Poor Gail, got surprised by how shallow it got ,and first trip out hit a rock and completely took the nose off her board. Ya the REEF was very mean that day, but makes for great stories. So November 17 2010 I finally got that day. It was the exactly the same day. check out the bouy report for port colbourn www.wunderground.com/MAR/buoy/2010/11/17/45142.html<FONT< a> face=Calibri> ya! 11ft waves! When it hits the reef easy 22ft. and glassy. And being nov 17 its too cold for everybody else(thanks oneil wetsuits and botties for making such warm shit) so I had all the waves 2 myself again. The only snag, I had 2 wear gloves .water 49 air 45, little cold, its so hard to windsurf with gloves, especially wave sail. But I had to suck it up, for these cond. Very painful on the forearms, they feel like bricks today. And I think I broke something in my foot! Its, very hard to bail out of the foot straps with 6mm booties on. But other than that, the waves were perfect, I sailed till dark on my 5.3 and 115 goya again. Please board companys make bigger wave boards for the real world! I couldn’t live without my 115 wave board. So conclusion, I wish every day was Oct 7th. HIT THE LIP!
BIG!! SOLO SESH
I had one sweet epic sesh. And I had it all to myself, don’t know if it was a good thing or not. Well to start off the wind was blowing north all day, till about 3:30 and that lake was butter smooth. Then the front went thru. WHAM! Blowing 35-45 SSW. I arrived at 4:30 and it was cranking. I could barley stand up, had to chase my hat for about 100yds, it was freaking crazy. The wave’s looked pretty flat but was building very quickly. I rigged up a 4.0 thinking it would back off a little bit. Suited up and headed out with the 70L wave board. Ohh ya I am the only one here. With it gusting up to 50+ I got the bright idea to test that new life jacket I got in the spring. Prob the only non crazy thought I had all day. Hehehe. Well, went out, and got hammered, could not hang on to the 4.0. to save my life. Time to break out the 3.4 again. This time the 3.4 felt perfect, and the lake was getting mean, there were head high chop. About every 20 feet there was a ramp to hit. And man it was windy! the spray off the waves hurt like hell when it hit your face. Then a rain storm hit and that really hurt, so took 5 for the rain storm to pass. Had a quick bowl of award winning chili, (from chili cook off 2010). The rain passed quick and took a little wind with it. I went back to the 4.0 and it was perfect. By now it was getting dark but the waves were huge. So I head out to the 2 reef to try to get some big sets. When I was out there I noticed a 3rd reef and I have seen this before, its more obvious in south swell. Well I saw a monster set jacking up. I jibed on the second wave, almost wiped out cause it jacked up so quickly. This thing was huge I hit the lip on the 2 full bottom turn. Then got 2 more turns in. pretty much on the very edge of death the whole time. That was a sweet fast 15-20 ft glassy wave. I was beyond pumped. I caught 3 more sets like that, before I could not see anymore cause of darkness. As I was sailing in from being a ½ mile out into the lake. I thought to myself this place rocks 4 hours ago it was perfectly flat water. Now I was hitting the lip on a 20 ft wave. Unbelievable! Then the next thought popped into my head I’ve been sailing out here for the last 2 hours partly in the dark in 50+ winds and 20 ft waves a half mile out, all by my self, I am freaking crazy. But man what a rush. Hey you only live once! And I promise you one of these days, well get some pics of these big waves, its not easy cause they are so far out, you need a camera with a 100x zoom or a heli. If any body has either please contact me.
Hit the Lip!!!
A REAL TUBE RIDE!
I got in tube yesterday and I made it out alive. I think that might be the first time ever. I have been in the tube tons of times, but it always closes out on me. I was SUP Surfing at H-Bay, with nobody around, no leash, air temp 46 degrees and just about dark. I am really Crazy stupid!!! The waves were glassy, about head high and peeling left. On the wave before I had to swim in cause I got smashed trying to hit the lip, and of course the board washed all the way in. I was going to pack it in after that, but I needed one more ride, it was too nice! So I paddled back out, right away a big big big set was right in front of me and I could tell it was turning a little more left. I caught the 2 wave, went down the face, got some good speed and turned left. It was so glassy smooth, but it was walling up really really fast. At this point I was in too deep I had to try to make it to the end which was about 15 yards away. So I crouched down, grinded my teeth and felt the board really accelerate. This wave was like a brick shit house. Then in a split second I saw it! A tube of water, I was in! The barrel door was right at the front of my board. I could feel the top of the barrel hit the very top of my head. At that point I was like sweet, but I have been here before, time to get smashed. I think I might have even closed my eyes for a split second awaiting destruction. Except this time it didn’t happened. It was like that barrel just froze, and I shot right out thru it, and stood up and was still alive. Surfed right in to the beach and started to walk home like nothing happened. It wasn’t till about half way home that I realized what I just did. Holy Shit! I got in the barrel and made it out. I have never done that before. Sweeeeeeettttt. My stoke meter is thru the roof today. Every time I think about that 2 second moment it seems like it was a minute ride. Just amazing! Hit The Lip! And get barreled.
gail and went to the buffalo botanical gardens www.buffalogardens.com last night for the night lights at the garden display. it was a great way to warm up on a cold winter night as well as enjoy the spectacular light show in the gardens. there were many interactive displays such as sound effects and a drum which controled the lights. this event runs ends next week with feb. 17-18-19 being the last days. if you get a chance check it out.
